ROOT CANALS: Root canals become necessary when the nerve in a tooth becomes inflamed or infected. This is usually caused by deep cavities or trauma. Occasionally, a tooth can begin to hurt for no apparent reason. When the nerve is involved to the point that it cannot recover, we initiate root canal therapy. During this procedure, we remove the entire nerve from the affected tooth, disinfect it and seal it. This is typically done in one appointment unless heavy infection is present. General dentists may refer molar teeth or teeth with complications to an endodontist for the procedure.
